Following a whirlwind of diplomatic activity, from a meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska to hosting Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, President Donald Trump is now pushing for a resolution in Ukraine. He has set a two-week deadline for a decision that could reshape the conflict.
The US president has put two starkly different options on the table: impose “massive sanctions” on Russia to force a settlement, or adopt a hands-off approach and let the parties handle it themselves. The choice will depend on the progress made toward a Putin-Zelensky summit in the coming days.
In an interesting development, Putin himself has praised Trump’s role. Speaking in Sarov, the Russian leader said that despite relations being at a low point, Trump’s presidency represented a “light at the end of the tunnel.” This could be interpreted as a positive response to Trump’s direct engagement.
Putin also used his speech to highlight what he sees as a key difference between Russia and the West. He argued that sovereignty is an existential question for Russia, whereas he believes Western European nations can exist without it. This ideological position will be a key factor in the high-stakes negotiations ahead.
