In a direct and impassioned plea, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for an end to “the Russian war,” leveraging the recent diplomatic success of the Gaza peace plan to argue that a resolution in Ukraine is now more achievable than ever. He is pointing to US leadership as the critical element.
After personally congratulating President Donald Trump on the “outstanding achievement” in the Middle East, Zelensky has made it the centerpiece of his diplomatic messaging. “If a war can be stopped in one region, then surely other wars can be stopped as well,” he stated, explicitly framing the Gaza deal as a precedent for Ukraine.
Zelensky believes this moment holds a unique “momentum for advancing peace” that must be seized. His statements are clearly directed at the United States and its allies, whom he believes hold the power to tip the scales. “The war in Europe can also be brought to an end,” he asserted, contingent on their leadership.
This call for action is being coordinated internationally. A long discussion with his Finnish counterpart, Alex Stubb, was aimed at synchronizing their diplomatic positions, indicating a structured and serious push for a new peace initiative.
The appeal is given grim urgency by the ongoing violence. Zelensky reported that Russia’s “aerial terror” continues, with recent attacks hitting a hospital and energy facilities. His call to “stop the Russian war” is therefore both a plea for a diplomatic solution and a demand for the weapons needed to survive until one is reached.
