Omar García Harfuch, the Security Cabinet coordinator, has become a pivotal figure in this renewed collaboration, engaging in numerous discussions with high-ranking US officials. These meetings have emphasized the importance of intelligence sharing and combating organized crime. Mexican authorities assert that the expedited exchange of information has enhanced their ability to swiftly address criminal activities.
Since Sheinbaum took office, Mexican law enforcement has reported a significant number of arrests, extensive seizures of weapons and drugs, and the dismantling of numerous clandestine drug labs. The country has also expedited the extradition of prominent criminal suspects to the US, alongside a notable reduction in fentanyl trafficking. This collaborative effort signifies a departure from the previous administration’s approach, where a US intelligence unit in Mexico was shut down and foreign security agents faced increased restrictions. The bilateral relationship faced additional strain in 2024 due to reports alleging connections between drug trafficking funds and López Obrador’s 2006 presidential campaign. Despite these challenges, the current administration under Sheinbaum remains committed to strengthening ties with the US while emphasizing the importance of respecting Mexico’s sovereignty.
