Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Monday that Mexico remains undecided on which candidate to endorse for the upcoming United Nations secretary-general position following Michelle Bachelet’s withdrawal from the race. Bachelet, initially backed by Mexico and Brazil, stepped down from her candidacy on September 19 after failing to gain adequate support within the UN Security Council.
Sheinbaum highlighted that Mexico had supported Bachelet due to her extensive experience in international relations, her advocacy for human rights, and her commitment to multilateralism. “We have no one to support at the moment,” Sheinbaum stated, indicating that Mexico would await further developments in the selection process before determining its stance.
The president also emphasized the need for reforms within the United Nations, suggesting that the organization should enhance its effectiveness in resolving international conflicts and promoting peace and human rights. According to Sheinbaum, the UN should take on a more robust role in addressing global crises.
As the race to succeed current UN Secretary-General António Guterres, whose term concludes on December 31, 2026, continues, seven candidates remain in contention. Mexico’s final decision on whom to support will likely depend on how the selection process unfolds in the coming months.
