HAKONE, JAPAN – In a move that signals confidence in domestic luxury tourism, Hotel Okura has unveiled plans for Okura Resort Hakone Gora—its first resort property on Japanese soil. The 2029 opening will bring a new level of sophistication to Hakone, a mountainous retreat that draws nearly 20 million visitors each year.
Partnering with Nishimatsu Construction under an agreement signed this past July, Hotel Okura is betting big on the enduring appeal of hot spring tourism. The resort promises an intimate experience with just 58 rooms, but here’s the kicker: every single room will feature its own private outdoor bath fed by genuine Owakudani spring water.
Designer Gwenael Nicolas has dubbed the aesthetic “Forest Hideaway,” aiming to blend luxury with the area’s natural mountain beauty. Beyond the private baths, guests can expect indoor hot springs, saunas, upscale teppanyaki restaurants, and a sophisticated bar lounge.
The announcement comes as Japan’s luxury hospitality sector sees growing investment, with Hotel Okura positioning itself at the forefront of high-end domestic travel experiences.
