‘Canada cheated’: Trump ends negotiations over reagan ad

Date:

Declaring that “Canada cheated and got caught,” President Trump has ended all trade negotiations with the US neighbor. The move was a response to an ad from Ontario that quoted Ronald Reagan .
Trump claimed on social media that the “fake” ad was an attempt to influence US supreme court hearings on his tariffs. He blasted Canada for “egregious behavior.”
The ad, launched by Ontario premier Doug Ford, used a 1987 clip of Reagan stating that “trade barriers hurt every American worker.” Ford has been a vocal critic of the 35% US tariffs.
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation also condemned the ad, saying it used “selective audio” to “misrepresent” the former president’s message and that it is exploring legal options.
The suspension of talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, jeopardizes a trade relationship responsible for c$3.6 billion in daily cross-border commerce.
