Zelensky Calls It Partnership. History Will Call It Vindication.

Date:

Volodymyr Zelensky, whose August proposal to help the United States defend against Iranian drones was dismissed by parts of the Trump administration as self-promotional, is now being called on to do exactly what he proposed. His response has been characteristically generous: Ukraine mobilized within 24 hours, sending specialists and interceptor drones to Jordan to protect the American soldiers that Washington’s earlier decision had left exposed.
The substance of Zelensky’s August proposal was rooted in hard military experience. Ukraine had been fighting Iranian-designed Shahed drones deployed by Russia for years before walking into the White House briefing room. The counter-drone systems Kyiv developed to survive that assault were specifically designed to intercept Shahed-type weapons inexpensively and at scale. The relevance to the threat in West Asia was direct and obvious.
The proposal outlined a network of regional drone defense hubs that would protect American positions in Turkey, Jordan, and Gulf states. It included an explicit warning about Iran’s drone program advancement — a warning that some White House officials acknowledged reading before choosing not to act on it. Trump asked his team to pursue the matter; they did not.
The failure to follow through is now described by insiders as the most significant tactical mistake made in the period leading up to the Iran conflict. The cost of that mistake in human terms — seven American service members killed by the Iranian drones that Kyiv warned about — is a figure that no official statement will adequately contextualize.
Ukraine’s deployment to Jordan and Gulf states represents both a military contribution and a kind of validation. The proposal that was doubted has been implemented under fire. The ally that was judged as too eager to be useful has proven itself indispensable. The partnership that could have prevented casualties is now working to limit them.
