Tourism flows between El Salvador and Guatemala are witnessing rapid growth, establishing one of Central America’s most robust regional travel markets and altering tourism dynamics throughout the area. In 2025, El Salvador welcomed 4.1 million international visitors, continuing a trend of strong tourism expansion over several years. A significant segment of these tourists originated from neighboring Guatemala, with approximately 1.5 million Guatemalans visiting El Salvador during the year.
Simultaneously, over 1.75 million Salvadorans traveled to Guatemala, underscoring the rising appeal of short cross-border excursions and regional tourism. Unlike traditional markets primarily reliant on international flights, this surge is predominantly fueled by road travel. Nearly half of El Salvador’s tourists entered via land, while Guatemala reported even higher numbers of overland arrivals.
This burgeoning trend has given rise to what experts call “exploration tourism,” where travelers indulge in brief escapes focusing on beaches, mountain towns, cultural sites, and natural attractions. For Guatemalan visitors, El Salvador’s renowned surf beaches such as Playa El Tunco, El Sunzal, and El Zonte are popular choices. In contrast, Salvadoran tourists are drawn to Guatemala’s volcanic regions, hot springs, and mountainous areas.
Enhanced border infrastructure and streamlined migration procedures have further facilitated the tourism boom by minimizing travel delays between the two nations. The expanding tourism corridor is boosting economic activity for restaurants, hotels, and local businesses in border regions. Officials anticipate that overland tourism will continue to rise through 2026.
This trend is also introducing new competition for Costa Rica, whose tourism industry remains largely dependent on long-haul international visitors from North America and Europe. Analysts note that Central America is increasingly being marketed and experienced as a cohesive multi-country destination, encouraging tourism operators to devise regional travel packages.
