Despite this disagreement, both nations continue to collaborate on defense matters. US Ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, recently announced that Mexico will gain access to the US drone procurement market, underscoring ongoing defense cooperation between the two countries. This development highlights a commitment to work together in areas of mutual interest despite political tensions.
In a significant gesture of collaboration, President Sheinbaum has authorized Mexican Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch to attend a US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) security conference in Argentina. This decision marks a reversal from an earlier stance of non-participation, showcasing an effort to engage constructively on critical issues such as drug trafficking, border security, and organized crime.
The bilateral relationship, however, faces additional challenges. US allegations against officials in Mexico’s Sinaloa state, along with calls from Washington for arrests and extraditions, have strained ties.
