In his inaugural address to the United Nations General Assembly, Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco reiterated Mexico’s dedication to principles of national sovereignty and non-intervention while emphasizing the importance of international cooperation. Velasco, standing in for President Claudia Sheinbaum, highlighted Mexico’s ability to collaborate globally without compromising its sovereignty.
Velasco underscored Mexico’s strategy of fostering international partnerships through mutual respect and equal footing, rather than subordination. He also linked domestic policies on social issues, including poverty reduction and decreasing homicide rates, to Mexico’s broader stance that sustainable peace hinges on social development and respecting nations’ territorial integrity and self-determination.
On international matters, Velasco voiced Mexico’s continued support for a two-state solution in the Middle East, acknowledging Palestine’s right to exist within secure and recognized borders. He also reiterated Mexico’s opposition to the U.S. embargo against Cuba, affirming Mexico’s commitment to providing humanitarian aid.
During the assembly, Velasco engaged in discussions with officials from several countries, including Spain, France, Qatar, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Peru. The meeting with Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares focused on enhancing bilateral relations and multilateral cooperation, as well as preparations for the upcoming Ibero-American Summit in Madrid.
Mexico’s discussions with Peru centered on the reopening of embassies following the restoration of diplomatic relations, with both parties agreeing to prioritize dialogue and mutual respect. Other meetings addressed economic cooperation, strategic investments, UN reform, trade relations, and efforts to bolster multilateral institutions.
