Tech-Enhanced Safety Measures Affirmed by President Sheinbaum Following Celebration Incident

Date:

In the wake of a tragic incident that led to the deaths of four people during Mexico’s victory celebrations over Ecuador, President Claudia Sheinbaum has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to safety for international travelers. Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico remains a secure destination, despite the unfortunate events, and highlighted the efforts by Mexico City’s authorities to enhance crowd management strategies for future public gatherings. Her remarks were made as a response to the United Kingdom updating its travel guidance, urging its citizens to exercise caution during upcoming football-related festivities due to increased reports of mobile phone theft and drink spiking.

President Sheinbaum acknowledged these concerns while detailing the new measures being implemented to safeguard public events. Highlighting Tuesday’s incident, where three people died from asphyxiation and another suffered a fatal cardiac arrest amid an overwhelming crowd of over one million near Paseo de la Reforma, she assured that additional safety protocols are already in place. Plans include the installation of more large screens along the Paseo de la Reforma to disperse spectators over a broader area, reducing the risks associated with dense crowd concentrations.

Moreover, Sheinbaum noted the continuous collaboration between security personnel and officials from the federal government and the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, who are dedicated to guiding and assisting fans during future celebrations. While acknowledging the complexities involved in managing such massive crowds, she pointed out that the focus is on public guidance rather than attempting to contain the vast numbers physically.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada also announced reinforced civil protection, healthcare, and public security measures in anticipation of the next major football celebration slated for Sunday. During the previous event, approximately 15,000 police officers, including over 4,200 deployed along Paseo de la Reforma, were unable to prevent the deadly occurrences, as the city witnessed its largest public gathering on record with more than 1.4 million attendees.

City authorities are now advocating for fans to celebrate in multiple locations rather than congregating solely around the Angel of Independence monument. They are also promoting responsible alcohol consumption and considering restrictions on alcohol sales in central areas during significant public events. As preparations continue for another potential large turnout, additional crowd management and safety measures are expected to be announced before the weekend.
