Mexico is experiencing a revival in cultural and diplomatic ties with Spain and France, marking an end to previous tensions that strained relationships under earlier administrations. President Claudia Sheinbaum’s government has embarked on a mission of cultural diplomacy, leveraging exhibitions, cultural exchanges, and the exchange or return of historical artifacts to foster renewed cooperation with the European nations.
The diplomatic relationship with Spain had notably soured during former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s tenure, particularly due to demands for Spain to recognize historical abuses from the colonial period. However, under Sheinbaum, these tensions have eased, with cultural initiatives paving the way for improved interactions. Recent years have seen Spain honor Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide and the National Museum of Anthropology, while Mexico sent over 400 pre-Hispanic artifacts to Madrid for exhibitions.
Mexico’s relationship with France has also seen a positive shift. Previously marred by disputes such as the Florence Cassez case during the administrations of Felipe Calderón and Nicolas Sarkozy, the connection is being revitalized. Under the leadership of Sheinbaum and French President Emmanuel Macron, both countries have committed to strengthening cultural cooperation.
A key highlight of this renewed collaboration is France’s loan of the Azcatitlan Codex to Mexico, celebrating 200 years of diplomatic relations. This historic manuscript, which details the history and migration of pre-Hispanic peoples, is currently on display at Mexico’s National Museum of Anthropology and History, symbolizing the deep cultural ties between the two nations.
