US President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he had ordered strikes against ISIS militants in northwest Nigeria, describing them as “terrorist scum” responsible for systematic attacks on Christian populations. The operation represented the culmination of months of escalating rhetoric from the administration.
The military action came after Trump issued multiple warnings in October and November characterizing violence against Nigerian Christians as an “existential threat” approaching genocidal levels. The president had explicitly threatened military intervention if attacks continued, threats that materialized into strikes conducted on Christmas Day.
In his statement, Trump emphasized that the Department of War executed precision strikes against militants who had been viciously killing innocent Christians. He highlighted American military capabilities and his administration’s commitment to preventing radical Islamic terrorism from flourishing. The president praised the operation as demonstrating unique American prowess.
The Nigerian government confirmed the strikes through its Foreign Ministry, describing them as part of established security cooperation with the United States. This collaboration involves intelligence sharing and strategic planning to combat terrorism and violent extremism. Nigerian officials made clear that their country opposes terrorist violence against all religious groups.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth expressed gratitude to Nigeria for enabling the operation and suggested that more strikes could follow. He noted that Trump had been clear about his intentions and that ISIS had learned this lesson on Christmas. The Pentagon provided video evidence showing weaponry being deployed from naval vessels. Nigerian President Bola Ahmed, while participating in the security cooperation, has emphasized that Nigeria’s constitution protects citizens of all faiths and that the country maintains its commitment to religious freedom despite ongoing security challenges.
